Gaming in the fire

I had an enjoyable Ludology class playtesting.

Rudely interrupted by the fire alarm.

We playtested Opposites and I found it enjoyable. 4 of us played and played to a finish. It was the first time to have the full 4 players and it worked well. There was good conflict and play was good.
The 4 colour and the cycling through these worked well, the extra complexity added an extra dimension to the game. In the endgame i converted a large number of my counters to black (my picked colour) only to be cycled through to white at the last minute.
The new colour board worked well - the printed progression of colours was clear.
I would like to progress the game further. I have been searching for counters online, the painted money isn't the best and slightly bigger counters would be better. I think moving to an A3 print with bigger counters would be better.

Hugh was suggesting adding extra dimensions to the game, magic squares etc, but on further though i think the game has enough complexity and sometimes simplicity is better. Maybe if we get a chance to playtest on wednesday could try out options.

We then played Medieval game of conquest.
A great idea with a wonderfully designed set of instructions.
We only had a short time to play but it had great potential. With slight modifications it could work very well.

Puzzles
I am playing a lot of Professor Layton on the DSi - its interfereing with my soaps. I am getting better at the puzzles but still find them very challenging. The more i play the less frustrated at the game narrative i become. The glue to hold the puzzles together is important - i am looking forward to the new release this month.

Deadspace
I am playing a bit of deadspace, I find it so eerie - a really enjoyable play. The sluggish movement fits the style so well. I find myself so jarred by the attacks on the player and am stopped in my tracks everytime he is stabbed. The sound track is phenominal - the slow breathing is so atmospheric.

World of Warcraft - Gonna take the plunge later once i get the assignments done, "Stay away from the dark side Luke" - I think i need to take the plunge.

In at the deep end

In at the deep end

So many games - such little time - time management?
Busy installing and setting up my gaming machines - loving it.
Got a candy yellow Dsi xl with Braintraining, ordered an R4i card waiting on that.
I tried an emulator on the pc for Professor Layton testing seemed to work fine. The story is really anoying much better if they had a puzzle only version.
Found an xbox arcade to crack - €50 with no controller picking up today, bit scared to do the firmware but can't wait to play red dead redemption. Found a cake of dual layers will pick up today as well.
Currently copying Dead Space - can't wait to be scared. Loved the footage and postmortem in class today.
Playing Mirrors edge - I find the controls tricky but love the style and interaction. Love the life on the rooftop.
Started playing Civ V - the intro movie is awesome I was questioning whether it was an actor, it won't be long till all game play is that good.
Loving Psychonauts, wonderful graphics and the style is awesome. I found the gameplay enjoyable and enjoy the easy play.
Started playing creaky old memory The game i have to review for next week - stylish view , not so sure of the gameplay bit tricky to get going. Will try prezi for my review.
Started playing Minecraft - don't know what to do - I think i need a tutorial!

Playtesting In Ludology Class

Had a good time at playtesting today
Started with Festivus, a great rock festival territorial acquisition game. The board and accessories were great and with some modification played quite well.
Then played my Go variant Opposites. Played an enjoyable game and decided to progress this game to next week with some modifications. The mods are to add 2 new colours red and blue (fire and water) and to cycle through the colours instead of the simple black and white switching.
Had a great time playing the Mario Kart board game from last years class. I was really impressed with the quality of production and once we got to grips with the rules it played well. I hope my game can come near to its standard.

Puzzle Creation

I came up with my 10 puzzles - harder than I thought and took longer than I thought to test and document.
Scared by the hard puzzles Hugh sent out - I feel stupid trying them don't know if i have any correct.

Ludology Microtalk 1

First Version of Ludology Microtalk. 5 areas of my life to create 5 games. 20 slides 16 secs per slide.

Chris Crawford The Dragon Speech

A wonderful heartfelt presentation from one of the kings.

I really empathise with him. When I started in software development one man teams did analysis, design, implementation, testing and documentation. A team of 3 was a very large scale project. Things have progressed now to a production line with very little scope for creativity or innovation. He definitely had issues with the modern large scale, commercial, goal driven product lifecyle, which apparantly Chris had problems fitting in with.

My gift to You

Imperfect information, Terminal Conditions and Conflict

Ludology Minigame exercise 29/9/2010

I found this weeks minigame exercise very interesting. I came up with a 5 card rummy style game with a dice roll to obtain a score on each round. A very simple game with imperfect information (players did not know the other players hands). The rules were simple and it was easy to play but it was quite dull. Using cards and dice together was interesting but my game added nothing more than a twist on an old variant.

A far more enjoyable game to play was elevens, this was more interesting due to conflict. The ability to snipe a card from another player and possibly obtain their good cards was a welcome twist. This game also used a dice to better effect than a simple score - a meaningful branch in the game with choice based on the dice.

We then play tested another groups game. This was a simple linear path with different coloured squares with some squares causing a player to get a card with a play modifying behavior. Conflict arose again in this with the ability to make a player miss a turn or force the player to retreat back the play surface.

The conflict in both these games made them enjoyable and the tension created between players added to the overall experience.

Do we need to win? One thing I noticed with some of the games was the unendedness of them. We are supposed to finish the game in 8 minutes but some of the games from this week might never reach an ending. Does a game need to end? In some games there is no terminal condition, experience goes up, the character gets more abilities, the world gets more complex - do they ever need to end?

first ludology class

really enjoyed the first ludology and gameplay class
was a bit out of my depth
got going in the end

created a game and rules for a triangular 3 pie game trivial pursuits style
setup startup conditions and rules to play
played the game and took 8 mins to finish play cycle

my partner in crime came up with a groovy straw construction game
i didn't really understand it - it was really thinking out of the box
it made me realise how static my thought can be

swapped games with another group and played their battleships style game
as the game progressed and the rules and gameplay revealed itself it became richer
implicit or undescribed play can be far richer

The second time defining the rules for the game to give to the other group
was not as clear as the first time - ambiguity had crept in after play
